HoverDesk Tutorial - The Pop Up Menu - Explained

The Pop-up Menu

The HoverDesk Pop-up menu is accessible by right clicking any where within the desktop. A left click outside the menu will hide the menu again.
NOTE: To access the pop-up menu, you must have "Hide Desktop Icons" enabled in the HoverDesk General Configuration.

First I'll just do a quick talk through the pop up menu. There are a few do's and don'ts with the pop up menu, mainly to do with sizes of the textures.
The next page will deal with actually applying the textures to the pop up menu

The Menu Top Texture

PURPOSE
To display the title of the folder/menu you are viewing.
Also, it is a convenient 'handle' to drag the menu around your desktop.

RULES

1. The menu_top must be the same width as all the other menu textures (except arrow and arrowA)
2. The height can be whatever you like. Anything from 1 pixel to 41!! An important point to note is the purpose of the menu_top texture (see above)

POINTS TO NOTE
The menu_top (as with all other parts of the menu) supports transparency. Use 'the great pink' 255,0,255 for parts of the texture you want to appear to transparent.

The Menu Norm Texture

PURPOSE
To display the contents of a menu/folder in a simple text form. This way an entire folder's contents can be viewed without having to open a window.

RULES
1. The menu_norm must be the same width as all the other menu textures (except arrow and arrowA)
2. The height can be whatever you like, but it must be the same height as menu_selected.

POINTS TO NOTE
The menu_norm (as with all other parts of the menu) supports transparency. Use 'the great pink' 255,0,255 for parts of the texture you want to appear to transparent.
The transparent parts must match exactly with the transparent parts in menu_selected.

The Menu Selected Texture

PURPOSE
Basically displays a hover image for when your mouse is over a selected menu item.

RULES
1. The menu_selected must be the same width as all the other menu textures (except arrow and arrowA)
2. The height can be whatever you like, but it must be the same height as menu_norm.

POINTS TO NOTE
The menu_selected (as with all other parts of the menu) supports transparency. Use 'the great pink' 255,0,255 for parts of the texture you want to appear to transparent.
The transparent parts must match exactly with the transparent parts in menu_norm.

The Menu Divider Texture

PURPOSE
To create a break in menu items you may wish to segregate into subsections.

RULES
1. The menu_divider must be the same width as all the other menu textures (except arrow and arrowA)
2. The height can be whatever you like!!

POINTS TO NOTE
The menu_divider (as with all other parts of the menu) supports transparency. Use 'the great pink' 255,0,255 for parts of the texture you want to appear to transparent.
You don't necessarily need a spacer texture.
You can use menu_norm, menu_selcted, menu_bottom or menu_top as your spacer texture, OR have no texture at all.

The Menu Bottom Texture

PURPOSE
Basically for decoration purposes only, to finish the menu off at the bottom, but can also be used as a convenient 'handle' to drag the menu around your desktop.

RULES
1. The menu_bottom must be the same width as all the other menu textures (except arrow and arrowA)
2. The height can be whatever you like!!

POINTS TO NOTE
The menu_bottom (as with all other parts of the menu) supports transparency. Use 'the great pink' 255,0,255 for parts of the texture you want to appear to transparent.
You don't necessarily need a bottom texture.
You can use menu_norm, menu_selcted, menu_spacer or menu_top as your spacer texture, OR have no texture at all.

The Arrow Texture

PURPOSE
To show if a menu item has another menu to it, for example a menu item saying 'My Documents' will have an arrow to indicate that there is another menu which will display what is inside your 'My Documents' folder or a menu item such as 'exit options' will have an arrow to indicate that there is another menu which will display options such as restart, shutdown, log off or quit HoverDesk.
The arrowA texture simply displays a hover image for when your mouse is over a selected menu item which has another menu.

POINTS TO NOTE
The arrow and arrowA (as with all other parts of the menu) supports transparency. Use 'the great pink' 255,0,255 for parts of the texture you want to appear to transparent.
Although in most menus the arrow appears on the right of the menu, it does not have to be here. You can place it on the left of the menu if you prefer (see examples below)

EXAMPLES

[Personal Note]

I prefer not to make my arrows transparent if I don't have to......makes it easier to line up the arrow with the menu_norm and menu_selected textures. On most occasions there's no need for it to be transparent anyway.

HOW TO APPLY THE TEXTURES TO HVD

Now that I've explained the seven parts you will need to create your menu we can move onto the next page, applying the textures to the HVD pop-up menu.
